Telematics is a portmanteau of the words telecommunications and informatics — it is, at its essence, a technology that sends, receives, and stores data about vehicles and other mobile assets in real time.

Think of it as the “nervous system” for a fleet, constantly collecting and transmitting information about what’s happening on the road.

Telematics systems typically do three things:

  • Collect Data – GPS, sensor systems, camera, onboard diagnostics (ex. OBD-II)
  • Transmit the data – cellular, satellite, wifi
  • Process and display the data – using dashboards, SMS and email alerts, apps

Examples of data points that are usually collected:

  • Location & routes (real-time GPS tracking)
  • Speed & acceleration
  • Engine diagnostics (fault codes, fuel use, maintenance needs)
  • Driver behavior (harsh braking, cornering, idling)
  • Cargo conditions (temperature, door sensors)
.

These data points are used by managers, drivers, and dispatchers to understand and be aware of how their fleet is operating in regard to the vehicle health, vehicle location, and vehicle operation/safety.

Real-Time Location & Route Optimization
By collecting GPS & route data in real time, fleet managers gain full visibility into where each vehicle is and how it's getting there. That helps you reduce wasted miles, avoid traffic delays, and adjust stops or routes on the fly.

Monitor Vehicle Health Proactively
Use engine diagnostics (fault codes, fuel usage, etc.) to spot maintenance needs before they turn into breakdowns. This keeps your fleet in better shape, reduces repair costs, and avoids unexpected downtime.

Improve Driver Safety & Behavior
Track harsh braking, rapid acceleration, cornering, and idling. With this data you can coach drivers, lower accident risk, reduce wear-and-tear, and build a culture of safer driving.

Ensure Cargo & Asset Integrity
Monitor conditions like temperature, door sensors, and other cargo-related data. This is especially critical if you transport perishables or high-value goods — keeping things within safe conditions and preventing loss or damage.

Alerts & Real-Time Insights
Using alerts (SMS or email), managers and dispatchers can be notified immediately when something needs attention — a fault code appears, a vehicle is off route, or driver behavior is risky — so they can intervene before problems escalate.
